About a month ago, the wife of one Reddit user found a squirrel twitching by the side of the road, having most likely been hit by a car. He had suffered major head trauma, and couldn’t eat, drink, walk or even move. She brought him home, where they managed to get him to sip a little through a syringe. Then they reached out to a wildlife rehabilitator, who provided some medicine to treat the animal’s head wound.
Six days later, the little fella was doing a lot better, and soon he had made himself a very comfortable home…in their Christmas tree.
According to the thread, they called him Mitten because he has very soft fur. He’s not the only animal in the household, as they have a dog, 4 cats, fish, 14 chickens, and a turtle, all of whom apparently ignore him. Since he appears comfortable and not strong enough to survive in the wild, the couple plans to build a 5-foot by 3-foot by 8-foot enclosure for him that includes a small tree.
“He’s doing really well,” the Reddit user wrote. “He has most of his mental capacity back, though he isn’t nearly as active or aggressive as the last squirrel we rehabilitated. He is fully developed now, and is still extremely tame. We are working with a wildlife refuge to give him the best life possible.”
