Police arrested school teacher charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child after she claimed she got pregnant by a 13-year-old student.
She became pregnant with his child in January, according to police. When she told the boy’s parents, they were “very supportive and excited”, she told a school district investigator, court documents show.
Alexandria Vera, 24, allegedly admitted to having a sexual relationship with the young boy since September last year. She told prosecutors she gave him her number on Instagram after he failed to show up to class at Stovall Middle School in Houston, Texas one day, and the relationship developed from there.
Ms Vera, who was removed from her job in April, reportedly became nervous and got an abortion after Child Protective Services questioned her and the student in February, according to court documents.
The teacher, who went missing before police could arrest her, turned herself in to Montgomery County police on Wednesday. She posted a $100,000 bond and was released. She is charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child.
The pair, who started to have sex on an almost daily basis, made no effort to hide their affair, court documents say.
The English teacher claims the student’s family are supportive of their relationship and ‘excited about the baby’, reports KRPC.
Ms Vera claimed she and the teenager were in love, and that she had been introduced to his family as his girlfriend, court documents state.
Parents at the school said they were horrified by the allegations.
“I have chills just because of this – just think that the teacher would even do something like this,” parent Mary Claycomb was quoted as saying by ABC-13.
Gerson Bonilla told Click 2 Houston: “(It’s) horrible for any father or any family member going through this situation. When you send your kid to the school you think everything will be safe for them and everything. But I think this is something that is serious that needs to be investigated.”
In addition, students in her class reportedly said she was the ‘cool teacher’, since she let them have their cell phones out during sessions, but they suspected she was having an inappropriate relationship with the student.
One student told Eyewitness News that other students were aware of the alleged relationship.
“He grabbed her, and everybody saw it,” the student said. “And then they were talking about it.”
One of her neighbors said that Vera ‘always’ had the 13-year-old boy at her home and would claim that he was her ‘brother’, according to KHOU.
In a statement to ABC-13, Aldine ISD, the organisation that runs Stovall Middle School, said: “When the allegation was made in April, the teacher was immediately removed from the school and placed on administrative leave.
Aldine ISD Police investigated the incident and turned their findings over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The safety and security of Aldine ISD’s students and staff remains a priority of the school district.
